Helping to Build a Better Tomorrow
Electrical power generation in the United States is growing four times faster than the bulk transmission system. Building new generation for the region will also require significant new transmission infrastructure, like the Mid-Atlantic Power Pathway (MAPP). MAPP will transport power from many different electricity generation sources, including renewable and alternative energies.

In 2008, renewable power generators provided roughly four percent of the total electricity used in the PJM region. As a result, PJM is working with state and federal regulators as well as industry leaders to create more awareness about renewable generation through the Renewable Energy Dashboard.
What is GATS?
PJM's Generation Attribute Tracking System (GATS) keeps track of how many hours of electricity are generated and creates certificates for companies that identify each one-megawatt of renewable power produced. GATS responds to the needs of state regulatory commissions, other state agencies and market participants to meet their target goals for renewable energy, called Renewable Portfolio Standards. In order to meet these state-imposed requirements, companies have to show they have accumulated, produced or purchased a certain number of GATS certificates.
