MITIGATION

Preserving Resources through Mitigation

PHI will invest in environmental mitigation projects within the counties and waterways where environmental impacts occur. These projects will result in the establishment of hundreds of acres of conserved lands and long-term benefits to natural resources on land and waterways.

PHI uses a number of mitigation strategies for protecting and preserving wildlife habitats, such as:

  • Creating, restoring and/or enhancing forested and non forested wetlands
  • Planting and/or conserving forested areas
  • Conserving forested areas occupied by the Delmarva Fox Squirrel
  • Creating and/or restoring oyster beds
  • Protecting cultural resources through avoidance, or collection and preservation
  • Enhancing cultural knowledge by developing education materials
  • Making annual payments to Tidal Wetlands Compensation Fund, a fund to replenish wetlands
  • Relocating nests from structures

       Before Mitigation                                                        After Mitigation

PHI restored a farm field to wetlands as mitigation for project impacts.
